Siriya Neerkkagam in Tamil (சிறிய நீர்க்காகம்)
Widespread resident. Smaller than Indian, with shorter bill, rectangular shaped head and shorter neck. Lacks yellow gular pouch. Adult breeding all black, with a few white plumes on forecrowns and sides of head. Non-breeding browner (and lacks white head plumes) with whitish chin. Immature has whitish chin and throat, and foreneck and breast a shade paler than upperparts, with some pale fringes. Inland and coastal waters.
