Malabar Pied Hornbill

Malabar Karuppu Vellai Iruvaayan in Tamil (மலபார் கருப்பு வெள்ளை இருவாயன்)
Resident. Compared with oriental, has axe shaped casque with large black patch along upper ridge, white outer tail feathers (immatures have black at base, but not so extensive as in Oriental), broader white trailing edge to wing and pink throat patches. Orbital skin is blue-black on male, pinkish on female. Female's casque similar in shape and patterning to male's, although lacks black at posterior end; bill of female lacks black at tip. Open forest and large fruit trees near villages.
