Darter or Snake Bird

Anhinga melanogaster 85-97cm
Paambu Thara in Tamil (பாம்புத்தாரா)
Widespread resident. Long, slim head and neck, dagger like bill, and long tail. Often swims with most of the body submerged. Adult has white stripe downside of neck, lanceolate white scapular streaks, and white streaking on wing coverts. Juvenile buffish white below, with buff fringes to coverts forming pale panel on upperwing. Mainly inland waters, also coastal waters.

  1. There was a sighting of the same species. The photos identify this species as an African immigrant. The other darters do not have such a prominent white semicircular patch along the neck.
